Hospitals and veterinary practices are similar.

So says Robbie May, 18, of Chipping Norton, who'll soon start studying medicine at the University of Western Sydney.

Robbie was one of 9282 students who received a main round offer from UWS and was accepted into the bachelor of medicine/ bachelor of surgery course.

"I've worked as a vet nurse in my father's veterinary practice for four years," Robbie said.

"I also did work experience at Liverpool Hospital recently and I was surprised by how similar the atmosphere was.

"I've always been interested in science, and applying it to make people healthier has always seemed the best thing I could do with my life."

Robbie, who went to Hurlstone Agricultural High School, said he was as surprised as he was delighted to receive a Universities Admission Index of 98.25.

"I wasn't expecting to receive such a high mark," he said. "I was expecting a 95 and thought that maybe I'd get a 97 if I was lucky, so I was very pleased.

"I'm interested in specialising in geriatrics as a doctor, which was inspired by my experiences with my grandparents.

"I think that older people have more health problems than anyone else.

"There's a lack of doctors to look after them, because it's not seen as a very glamorous specialty, so not many want to do it."

Robbie chose the UWS course because, he said, it was more hands-on than many of the others and involved three years of rotation, working in different hospitals in western Sydney.

"I've never been squeamish about blood," he said. "We've always lived behind the vet office and since I was little I've been running in and out of my father's surgery rooms and it's never bothered me."
