THERE is nothing wrong with being a recycled mayor, Gary Lucas told the meet-your-candidates forum last Wednesday.

Responding to calls to those who have served before to stand aside and give others a go on September 13, the former mayor said: ``There's nothing wrong with recycling recycling is good, so as a recycled mayor I will also be good. Why am I standing for the position of mayor? It's simply because I believe I have the will, the commitment and, most of all, the experience in having served as Mayor of Liverpool along with decades of helping the people of Liverpool via various sporting clubs and organisations.''

Mr Lucas was one of several standout speakers. Another was mayoral candidate Phil Sim who promised strong leadership if elected. He was also the one who, since announcing his intention to stand for mayor, who called for new faces on our council.

``We've got to put pride back into Liverpool; at the moment we're known for the wrong reasons,'' he told the audience.

``That's why I'm saying give me a go. I'll get the things done, the things that need to get done. And it's not that hard.''

Another Liverpool Community Independent Team candidate, Peter Harle, got a rousing response when he declared: ``Liverpool has been taken for granted for the last 100 years it's time we ended this neglect because Liverpool deserves better.''

Harle, who is number one on the LCIT ticket, added: ``I want to work for you.''

Former councillor Stephen Dobell-Brown, spoke of the need to resist moves by the State Government to steal council planning powers.

Dobell-Brown, another LCIT candidate, praised the forum, saying it was a great turnout that ``showed people in Liverpool cared''.

Prestons resident Allan Siaa, a self-employed family man of Samoan background spoke of mining Liverpool's potential.

``We should improve our city, make it a much better place for all our families,'' he said.

Signe Westerberg, owner manager of offices in Liverpool, offered ``fair and honest representation for all the people of Liverpool''. ``There are some big issues to tackle, we want to have safe streets and parks, to put pride back into Liverpool,'' she said.

The other member of LCIT to speak was Henry Jacotine, a Liverpool resident for almost 20 years. Mr Jacotine, a company manager, said he had much to offer Liverpool.

Liliana Ljubicic urged Liverpool voters to beware of Labor and Liberal party stooges standing as independent candidates. ``Go for a true independent, like me,'' she said.
