WHEN Ebony Holmes was a child, she had a very special friend.
``Nana'' Iris Wallace used to come to visit the children at Casula Public School and teach then to paint, sing songs and tell stories.
Ebony had grandparents she was close to, but she could see what these visits from ``Nana'' Iris meant for those who didn't have grandparents.
``It's good to show them that old people actually have something to say,'' Ebony said. ``I remember being so happy when she came to visit. She is so accepting.''
Ebony, who is now in year 10 at Campbelltown Performing Arts High School, came to sing to the present group of ``grandfriends'' at a morning tea.
``Nana'' Iris Wallace founded Grandfriends in 1988 as a group which seniors and grandparents could join and go into local primary school classrooms to volunteer their time.
Unfortunately, many of the volunteers are getting too old to go to schools to help out.
``We are passing on to those children our life skills, which is the most important thing for children who don't have grandparents or older friends in their lives,'' Mrs Wallace said.
