WHEN he heard a woman screaming from the next apartment block, Daniel Pain didn't hesitate.
He rushed out of his Mead Drive, Chipping Norton, block of units to the next building, where the commotion was coming from, and helped deliver Victoria Merriman's baby.
``Victoria's mother Claudia rushed downstairs screaming: `Call an ambulance, call an ambulance','' Mr Pain said.
``I heard her from my unit and knew I had to help.''
Mr Pain, who was on leave from work as an oil and gas surveyor, ran downstairs and then raced to the third floor of Ms Ward's unit to help.
``I went upstairs to the bathroom and Victoria was on the bathroom floor and the baby's head was coming out,'' he said.
The Mead Drive units' gardener Brian Taylor called 000 after Ms Ward rushed downstairs.
Mr Pain said: ``I quickly got on to the phone to 000 to get advice on what to do and helped deliver the baby. It all happened so quickly.
``It's the first time I have delivered a baby. It was an experience.''
Soon after, the paramedics arrived and Victoria and new arrival Chloe, weighing 4.1kilograms, were taken to Liverpool Hospital, where they spent three days.
Earlier that day, Victoria had gone to Westmead Hospital with contractions.
``We came home about 10am and everything was fine, but by 11.35am, my daughter was having a baby and my first granddaughter was born,'' a delighted Ms Ward said.
``I didn't know Daniel from a bar of soap before this, but we're so glad he was there for us.''
Ms Merriman said she didn't feel any abnormal pain during the birth.
``Everything happened so quickly,'' she said.
Ms Merriman is very grateful for Mr Pain's quick thinking.
``I was on the floor having the baby and all of a sudden Daniel came in and pulled the head out he was amazing,'' she said.
They have become friends through the experience.
