HOXTON Park residents say they will continue to oppose the construction of an Islamic school in the area, despite Liverpool Council approving a development proposal for the school last week.
Leif Lundberg said he and his neighbours are still against the decision, arguing that the school will cause traffic and parking problems and worsen flooding in the area. Mr Lundberg said residents were considering their next move.
``We're looking into everything, including legal options,'' Mr Lundberg said.
``I'm just so disgusted with the councillors that voted yes. I feel they didn't listen to [our] concerns at all.
``We did everything we could to illustrate to them how against the school we are but it made no difference, they just ignored us.''
He said councillor Mazhar Hadid's suggestion that residents should have commissioned their own traffic study showed he didn't understand his responsibility as a councillor.
``It is not the role of residents to spend thousands of dollars to defend against improper and unprofessional proposals,'' Mr Lundberg said.
Fellow resident Paula Pye said she was devastated by the decision.
``If it does go through, I'm really considering moving,'' Ms Pye said.
``The traffic gridlock that this school will cause just won't be manageable.''
The Champion was unable to obtain a comment from Dr Intaj Ali, representative of the applicant Malek Fahd Islamic School, and its Greenacre campus principal.
But after the council meeting which approved the school, Dr Ali said all residents' concerns had been taken into account.
``There will be extra traffic in the area, but there always is near a school,'' Dr Ali said.
``It will be very busy for about 30 minutes before school starts and about 30 minutes after it finishes and that will be it. We listened to residents' concerns and our planning has taken everything into account; there won't be any serious problems.''
