`Lakes' lovers unite to fight

13 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
CECIL Hills residents say they will never stop fighting Landcom's plan to create a suburb next to theirs.

The 650-house development will be built over some of the ``lakes'' on Lascelles Street after they are filled in.

Landcom calls them sediment ponds and says they were never meant to be permanent.

Locals Against Killing our Eco System (LAKES) will hold a meeting at 7.30pm, February 9 at Cecil Hills Community Centre.

Resident Michael Botfield said: ``We need as many people there as possible so we can inform everyone about what's going on. We want all the relevant stakeholders to be present, as well, to explain their positions.

``They sold our homes to us as being located in a `lakeside' estate and now they want to get rid of the lakes and put up lots of houses.

``This isn't what we moved here for.''

Mr Botfield said LAKES has found several faults with the development plans on exhibition at Liverpool Council.

``These plans aren't appropriate for this area they don't take into account a lot of vital factors.

``If this development goes ahead as it is we're going to face serious traffic and noise pollution problems as well as a further strain on the already limited amenities we have here.''

Residents argue that Landcom and its development partner Mirvac have not taken the area's lack of health and education facilities into consideration.

General manager corporate marketing Robert Sullivan said Landcom staff had not been formally invited to the meeting yet and would wait to see what was on the agenda before they made a commitment to attend.

``We have had meetings with the residents and have said we are willing to meet them further now that the plans are finished, but if they want to take it into their own hands to organise this meeting, that's fine,'' Mr Sullivan said.

``As far as problems with the plan go, the new development will have its own access road, so traffic on Lascelles Street should not increase from the levels experienced now.

``And the level of amenities was assessed during the drafting of the plan.

``The local schooling and educational facilities will be able to keep with this new development that won't be a problem.''
