Islamic school ball in Liverpool Council hands

Islamic school ball in Liverpool Council hands

20 May, 2009 11:26 AM
THE fate of a proposed Islamic school at Hoxton Park lies with Liverpool Council.

An Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel discussed the proposed development of the Malek Fahd Islamic School campus at 612 Hoxton Park Road.

Hoxton Park residents who oppose the 800-student school and representatives from the school, including the principal, Intaj Ali, were at the meeting.

About 20 residents spoke before the panel and mentioned their concerns, the main one of which is traffic.

Some residents and others at the meeting agreed said the information presented to the panel in a report had been ``flawed and misleading''.

One complaint about the report was that it had stated that a survey conducted for Liverpool Council found that peak hours for traffic within the estate were 10am to 11am and 5pm to 6pm.

But residents at the meeting insisted this was not so.

Planning consultant Richard Symth, who helped put together the development application, said the traffic problem would ease once the $71 million upgrade of Hoxton Park Road was complete.

Mr Ali stressed that the school was a planned development.

``We will start with just 50 children and build up slowly,'' he said.

``This is going to be a campus of the school, not a school itself.''

Mr Ali also said the school would help to increase local property prices.

The Independent Hearing and Assessment Report and a report prepared by the Director of City Planning, which will include any additional issues raised, will be presented and discussed at a council meeting on Monday, June 15.

The comment by Dr Ali that the school will increase property prices is an outright lie! In fact, the opposite is true, which we have arguing all along. The traffic nightmare it will create will destroy property values in the area. This proposal is criminal!

If this or any school is supposedly good for the area, make the access via Hoxton Park Rd, get the RTA behind it and open the access, if they aren't willing, use their reason not to allow the school. What, would it be that the traffic impact would be too great? DOH!!!

If this was a Christian Private school, or a public school, I don't think any residents would oppose the school been built there. Stop using the excuse of traffic and let the Council do its Job and decide whats best for area. I've never heard of any Christain or any other religous Private school been opposed when it wants to built a school somewhere, except when an Islamic school wants to built a school someone the whole community is against it. Why is that I ask?? Wake up to urselfs, a school is something good for the community and your children let it be Christian or Islamic.

To Anonymous; We WOULD oppose ANY school being built, we have said that all along. Traffic IS the issue here and if you lived in Hoxton Park, you would know that. If you don't, you should not even have an opinion because you don't have to put up with the traffic. This school would be a complete disaster for the area. WE now have to do the job council should be doing; looking after our area because Liverpool Council is not doing that.

Oh Anonymous. If you don't know what you're saying then please keep quiet.Better still get yourself out to Hoxton Park from 7.30 to 9.00am and actually see what we're talking about. It's people like you that talk rubbish when people are talking facts that make this Country's way of life a joke.Residents of hoxton park have said ANOTHER SCHOOL CANNOT BE BUILT. We have 4 schools inside our small estate and NO ROADS CAN TAKE ANY MORE. You really should learn to think for yourself because if you did you'd do your research and see HOXTON PARK IS DOING MORE THAN IT'S FAIR SHARE WHEN IT COMES TO SUPPORTING SCHOOLS. ARE YOU? We are fighting for our community here we don't want ANY MORE SCHOOLS!AND - DON'T USE RELIGION - WE'RE ALL SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING IT. Here do some actual thinking check this out-http://www.nomoreschoolsathox tonpark.com/index.htm

The people of Hoxton Park have raised a number of concerns since the school proposal was exhibited many residents have put huge number of hours to ensure the council and residents are aware of the major concerns.STILL THERE IS A NUMBER OF ISSUES THE COUNCIL HASNT ADDRESSED AND IN THE NAME OF JUSTICE FOR THE RESIDENTS WE BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE ANSWERED.The school if approved will be disasterous not only for Hoxton Park but also for many connecting area. This point seems been overlooked.Lets hope sanity will prevail in the end and we can get back to addressing the real problems in the area John Anderson 98258709 mob.0409368603

Oh Anonymous you clearly have no idea and most definately not live in Hoxton Park or you would never have said that, please we invite you and anyone else who wants to, to come in the hrs of 8am -9am in the morning or if you prefer 3-4pm in the afternoon. do you know because of the amount of schools in the area already there is no bus service for us between 2pm-4pm as they are taken up by School buses and if you want to go to Carnes Hill at that time forget it and walking is bad as you have to dart across the road and hope you don't get hit then there is less chance of getting hit as it is a car park not a street. these people who nothing about it should keep there comments to their selfs.

We were looking at buying the area, not anymore!! What a nightmare the traffic will be now!! It already takes forever to get to any sort of public transport. Hoxton park and the surrounding areas cannot support this.

How are the Muslim community and the younger generation of muslim people suppose the intergrate into our society when they are attending schools only fellow Muslims attend? I dont care about the traffic, i care about the future of Australia. If these kids start attending a school at the age of 5 just for fellow Muslims after being brought up in Muslim family what connection will they have with people of the greater commuinity....simply put, until they are older and start working life....not much at all. Can we go to Lebanon or what ever and build a Catholic school? What language will be largely spoken at this school? I'll also state that i have no religious beliefs, and you can call me racist or what ever cause in the end i couldnt care less. As i mentioned all i do care about is the future of my country Australia.

There are many Christian schools in Lebanon.

If you dont want the next generation to be racist you should think before you talk.
