ICAC moves over Muslim school

01 Jul, 2009 12:00 AM
HOXTON Park residents are considering filing a complaint against the council with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) after the decision to build a Muslim school in the area was upheld on Monday night.

Local resident John Anderson said councillors had a lot to answer for after they rejected a rescission motion against the original school decision.

``They never addressed any of the concerns that residents had,'' Mr Anderson said.

``They've failed us. They didn't look into the traffic concerns we had in the area at all.''

Mr Anderson said the residents were taking action and that ICAC should make an investigation.

Fellow resident Grant Kingston said Liverpool Council had failed to represent residents' interests.

``There was no engagement with residents,'' Mr Kingston said. ``Most of the councillors didn't come down and meet us. They didn't respond to our concerns; they just ignored us.''

Former councillor Steve Bowman said the officers hadn't done enough investigation.

Intaj Ali, a representative of the Malek Fahd Islamic School, said he was happy to sit down with residents and discuss plans for the school.

``I think it's important to explain our actual plans for the school more clearly to locals,'' Dr Ali said.
