Greens: Moorebank terminal will be built

31 Jul, 2010 08:10 PM
Greens candidate for Hughes said that even though the terminal planned for Moorebank is in the wrong place and is too big, she is sure it will still go ahead.

Susan Roberts said that the two major parties should come forward with a clear position on the proposed Moorebank intermodal freight hub.

She said despite the initiative being part of both the Liberal and Labor election platforms, both of her opponents in Hughes candidates are claiming to be opposed to any development.

``Unless there are official, party positions on the development all their protests are simply populism in the lead-up to an election,'' Ms Roberts said.

``Are they genuinely standing up for constituents interests against the policy of their own parties, or have they just smelled the way the wind is blowing on this issue?''

``If either Party has genuinely changed their position, it’s very simple to issue a formal statement, and do it now – before the election.

``The ALP have committed Federal funding to the project, and just weeks ago Tony Abbott backed it going ahead, so has there really been an eleventh hour change of heart or is it more vote-buying?''

Ms Roberts said the Greens were the only Party that had been consistent on the issue of intermodals.

``We don’t believe that Moorebank is an appropriate site for a variety of reasons, and we’ve been calling on the Government to either change their mind or at least dramatically reduce the scale.

``Intermodals are a valid concept, but should not be positioned where they have a massive negative impact on people and the environment.

``We believe carefully-sited, distributed hubs must be developed outside suburban areas rather than the single mega-hub planned for Moorebank.”

Ms Roberts believes that there is almost no chance of the development not going ahead in some form.

``The Stockland/QR site next door to the proposed Federal Government hub is itself 83 hectares, and will distribute massive amounts of freight.

``There’s no way that won’t go ahead, so for my opponents to be making promises otherwise is very misleading.

``We need a rock-solid commitment now from both parties that they will not add to the problem and if we don’t get that the Greens will be pushing hard in the Senate after the election to ensure the whole project is reconsidered''

In terms of the fact that the Moorebank terminal will be be built, the Greens are correct. It will be. Stockland/QR will operate one site while the Federal Government will operate the other. Qube Rail will transport containers between Botany and Moorebank and QR will use Moorebank as an intermodal terminal for trains between Sydney and other states. The reason for Moorebank was to take some road pressure off Botany while providing interlinking services between international shipping, national rail transport and Sydney container distribution. It is close to all major road and rail corridors. If the Greens have a better available, they should put it and put it now, prior to the upcoming elections. The fact is, the Greens don't have another or better site.

Isnt it wonderful how everyone but the residents of Liverpool have a say in how the container terminals are going to operate. It is typical of the way the residents have been taken for granted too long on this issue and a number of other issues. The residents as a means of protest should vote against the sitting member as a way to make the area a marginal area for a number of seats .Only then will we be taken seriously John Anderson 0409368603 wattle grove

The Federal Labor party for years were in favour of Badgeries Creek for the Sydney Second Airport. The idea was finally abandoned because there would be too many hassles. So now the sites set aside for an Airport are still waiting for certainty. If the area was so close to suitable for an Airport, why is it not to handle Sydneys Intermodal Freight requirements? Time to start putting Liverpools case I think, rather than being Fatalistic.

All the major parties including the Greens seem to have abandoned the area. Sure the local candidates are talking tough and seem genuine but the leaders in Canberra don't seem to be paying attention. In some cases we have been given the flick until after the election.

Pointing the finger is an easy past time, however the Greens are continuing to Lobby the relative Federal and State authorities to get answers and to be included in any community consultation processes. we have policies that directly outline our position on ‘intermodals’ and regional access. We are not the Government, so we can’t simply change the Government’s mind but we can use our strength as the Party of review in the Senate to negotiate for improved outcomes. Persistence however is essential.”

Federal Hughes seat and Menai state seat are both marginal seats with Swinging Voters. Who will stand up for South West Sydney and get our Votes?

I agree with Signe on this one. The Greens have got policies directly related to intermodals and they are to place them on the outskirts fetering into the cities. Not in the middle of suburbia. In my opinion the Greens inquiry by Lee Rhiannon is the only direct push from a major party. Both Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard and State Keneally and O Farrell have a lax approach on the matter. They have all gone into the easy option of excess land. Whereas the Greens have stated lets build up areas like Goulburn and up north and have the intermodals feeding into cities. Greens arent a bad alternative just dont follow their preferentials. Choose your own. Signe and Bill through their connections pushed for an inquiry. I think that can only greatly aid the cause. The Greens planning is much better in terms of intermodals. Thats my opinion anyway. I am just tired of crappy planning.

How many Protest Flyers have the Labor, Liberal or Greens handed out about the Intermodal Monster? The Greens probably reckon it would be appropriate to build it WEST of Liverpool on a Green Fields site. After all most Warehousing and Distribution is WEST and the Growth Centres are to be WEST as well. Liverpool could be Serviced Beautifully by a Western Intermodal as could the West and North West Via the M7. Growth in Warehousing and Distribution would continue in Liverpool continuing job creation and the Growth Centres would achieve important development supporting jobs as well. We need to plan for the long term future not just for short term gain that leaves Liverpool in needless pain.
