Greens candidate for Hughes said that even though the terminal planned for Moorebank is in the wrong place and is too big, she is sure it will still go ahead.
Susan Roberts said that the two major parties should come forward with a clear position on the proposed Moorebank intermodal freight hub.
She said despite the initiative being part of both the Liberal and Labor election platforms, both of her opponents in Hughes candidates are claiming to be opposed to any development.
``Unless there are official, party positions on the development all their protests are simply populism in the lead-up to an election,'' Ms Roberts said.
``Are they genuinely standing up for constituents interests against the policy of their own parties, or have they just smelled the way the wind is blowing on this issue?''
``If either Party has genuinely changed their position, it’s very simple to issue a formal statement, and do it now – before the election.
``The ALP have committed Federal funding to the project, and just weeks ago Tony Abbott backed it going ahead, so has there really been an eleventh hour change of heart or is it more vote-buying?''
Ms Roberts said the Greens were the only Party that had been consistent on the issue of intermodals.
``We don’t believe that Moorebank is an appropriate site for a variety of reasons, and we’ve been calling on the Government to either change their mind or at least dramatically reduce the scale.
``Intermodals are a valid concept, but should not be positioned where they have a massive negative impact on people and the environment.
``We believe carefully-sited, distributed hubs must be developed outside suburban areas rather than the single mega-hub planned for Moorebank.”
Ms Roberts believes that there is almost no chance of the development not going ahead in some form.
``The Stockland/QR site next door to the proposed Federal Government hub is itself 83 hectares, and will distribute massive amounts of freight.
``There’s no way that won’t go ahead, so for my opponents to be making promises otherwise is very misleading.
``We need a rock-solid commitment now from both parties that they will not add to the problem and if we don’t get that the Greens will be pushing hard in the Senate after the election to ensure the whole project is reconsidered''
