Department jumps to fix neglect

04 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
RESIDENTS of a Warwick Farm unit block claim that Housing NSW has for years neglected basic maintenance.

David Sharp, of the block in Lawrence Hargrave Road, said: ``The place is falling apart and it's really dangerous for tenants.

``A lot of the tenants are elderly and have health and mobility problems.

``With everything breaking down around here they could really hurt themselves.

``A tree that fell down during a recent storm.

``It's lying on top of the fence with branches sticking up in the air.

``One resident, who is aged 87, had to take it upon himself to trim it back.

``The mail boxes are arranged in a sort of brick box which isn't stable it's rocking. I don't think its been constructed properly and could fall at any minute.

``And all the wooden outdoor furniture has rotted and is falling apart.''

A Housing NSW spokesman said the block had a maintenance plan.

The mail boxes have been scheduled for repair, the wooden seats in the common area are to be replaced before the end of the year, and external painting would be carried out during the next 12 months.

``The tree is located on a school property and is considered a risk to the fencing,'' the spokesman said.

``Housing NSW will arrange to have the tree trimmed back to the fence line by the end of the week.''

Tenants may contact the Housing Contact Centre on 1300468746 with any maintenance matters.
