The fans must be heard

While on my holidays I followed with close interest the NRL held a rugby league forum where the fans could voice their opinions about the issues and matters in the game.

The forum should be held annually and at different locations throughout the nation so the grass-roots rugb y league people are heard, respected and their ideas implemented acted upon.

As long as the forums don't just become public relations exercises for the NRL hierachy to pay lip service to make it look good in the public eyes.

We don't want a repeat of the the Ideas Summit held by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in April this year where our beloved leader gathered people from all walks of life, business heads, community leaders and the captains of industry together in Canberra for two days of waffle and whiteboards drawing. I am still waiting for policy direction from this two-day event.

But that's another story and another blog about the rudderless government we have in this country.

I fear though the NRL meet and greet with the fans could become just that. A public relations exercise to appear they are keen to do something but in fact do nothing with it at all.

David Gallop needs to show true leadership and not the media positive chat and rhetoric for public consumption.

Here are some of my ideas I would like to have voiced at the forum.

Firstly, ban the wrestling altogether from the game.

Secondly, daytime grand finals to be locked in permanently and the 5pm timeslot we had this year when Manly obliterated the Storm is perfect. As it's the start of daylight saving, it's really 4pm, so it's trul;y a daytime encounter.

The day game is far better than night, we have too mich night footy and grand final day should be preserved and overall we need a better balance of night and day games.

More sunday afternoon footy at 2pm and 3pm kick-offs.

The NRL should make it clear to channel nine that delayed telecasts of matches are to be shelved and the league telecaster not be allowed to get away with the timeslots they have been during the World Cup.

The public deserve better.

Each NRL club be given a geographic territory and play one of their home matches each season in this area.

Example: Wests Tigers if they are designated the Riverina area play a match at Wagga and throw open the gates to the country folk for free.

Televise the game live to Sydney and the metropolitan areas and other country and rural regions of NSW and Australia.

Scrap the second Friday night game and move it to Saturday night at 7.30pm and channel nine to televise this match live.

Give better radio broadcast access and television coverage to country and regional areas, some places in this State can't get to watch the games live on Foxtel or on free-to-air television or hear the game on radio.

Play double headers to launch the season at either the Sydney Football Stadium or ANZ Stadium and charge a flat rate of $20 entry for both games.

Finally, play more games at Gosford which is a rugby league heartland and the NRL put $20 million on the table for a team to relocate there by 2011.

These are just some of my thoughts.
